Coal Duty – Marker Post

This is post number 44 of 218 that still exist.
Note the shield bearing a red cross, signifying the Corpration of the City of London.
The words ’24 VICT’ mean the 24th year of the reign of Queen Victoria.
Since she came to the throne in 1837, this post dates from 1861, following
an Act of Parliament – the ‘London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act’.
This was in force until 1890, when the coal duties were abolished.
The purpose of the post is to indicate the edge of the zone where taxes
on the movement of coal would be applied. The money collected went to
the City of London for improvements to infrastructure,
e.g. the Thames Embankment and Metropolis Improvement Fund.
In 2021, this post will have been in place on the south corner of Malt Lane
and Watling Street for 160 years, making it one of the oldest street objects in Radlett.
There are others in the area – do you know where they are?
